Angel Retreat to Connect Private Investors
Date Posted: 4/4/2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) is partnering with angel investors and other NC-based entrepreneurial support organizations to host an ‘Angel Investor Retreat’ on May 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, NC.

The Angel Investor Retreat will offer networking and educational opportunities for active, accredited angel investors in North Carolina and across the Southeast. Accredited angels are high net worth individuals who provide start-up capital to young companies to help them get off the ground.

CED is presenting the Angel Investor Retreat in partnership with Blue Ridge Angel Investor Network (BRAIN) of Asheville, Blue Ridge Entrepreneurial Council (BREC) of Asheville, Business Innovation & Growth Council (BIG) of Charlotte, Charleston Angel Partners (CHAP), Eastern North Carolina Investor Network (ENC-IN) of Greenville, Inception Micro Angel Fund (IMAF) of Winston-Salem, NC IDEA of Durham, Piedmont Angel Network (PAN) of the Triad, Piedmont Triad Entrepreneurial Network (PTEN), Research Triangle Ventures (RTV) of Raleigh, Triangle Accredited Capital Forum (TACF), Tri-State Investment Group IV (TIG IV) of Chapel Hill, Wilmington Investor Network (WIN) and others.

"Last year's Angel Investor Retreat was oversubscribed, and we look forward to another strong turnout of angels this year,” said CED President Monica Doss. “We are seeing exponential growth in good startups seeking seed-stage capital. Angels are a critical supply not only of capital, but they also bring domain expertise, networks, and business expertise to promising startups. With a notable shortage of other seed-stage resources in our state, North Carolina’s angels are especially important to our entrepreneurial future.”

The Angel Investor Retreat will offer networking opportunities and a panel discussion on “What Makes an Angel Deal Work.” The panel will discuss angel-backed success stories and identify new partnering models between investors.

In addition, this year’s Angel Retreat will feature presentations from eight North Carolina-based companies, showcasing promising investment opportunities from a range of industries, growth strategies and regions in the state. Presenting companies include the following:

• AudioFusion (Winston-Salem, NC) – medical hearing device
• Camden Products (Elizabeth City, NC) – antimicrobial coating and application system to prevent mold
• Consolidated Asset Recovery Systems (Raleigh, NC) – Internet portal for asset recovery
• InfoStrength (Raleigh, NC) – compliance software for life science companies
• MD Scientific (Charlotte, NC) – medical products for controlling blood glucose and preventing acute kidney failure
• MicroPhase Coatings (Garner, NC) – advanced coatings for boats and other manufacturing processes
• Novovita (Raleigh, NC) – ag-biotech process for waste recycling
• Sylvan Sport (Cedar Mountain, NC) – mobile sport trailer with "back-pack on wheels"

After a networking lunch wraps up at 2 p.m., angel attendees will then have the opportunity to attend CED’s 23rd annual Venture 2006 conference – held the afternoon of May 2 and the following day (May 3) at the Pinehurst Resort.

Accredited angel investors who are interested in attending the Angel Investor Retreat should contact CED’s Robert Albright via phone (919.549.7500 x123) or email (ralbright@cednc.org) for registration details. Due to space constraints, registration is available on a limited basis for active investors only.
